Jump Start Summer Science Immersion Program at the University of Maryland

The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland is pleased to once again offer Jump Start, a weeklong summer science immersion program for high school students who are currently sophomores and juniors. This summer’s Jump Start program will focus on Biomedical Science. Students spend the week conducting experiments in our state-of-the-art freshman biology laboratories and have the opportunity to meet with science faculty and students. The program fee for 2018 is $100, which helps defray the costs of instruction and materials.

Since its inception in 1999, there have been more than 1500 Jump Start participants representing over 200 area high schools. The program is quite competitive and attracts a very talented applicant pool. Last year, the average weighted grade point average (GPA) of students admitted to the program was 3.96. Most participants have had strong science preparation, including coursework in biology and chemistry.

You can learn more about the program via this flyer or the program’s website where you can also find the application. Application materials include an essay (submitted as part of the online form), transcripts, and a teacher recommendation. The online application form must be submitted by midnight on March 15th and supplemental materials must be postmarked by that date. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
